Next the surgeon will remove the excess tissue, fat and skin and move the nipple and areola into their new position. The surgeon then brings the skin from both sides of the breast down and shapes the new contour of the breast. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the armpit area.

You will be up and about in 1-2 days but you should not plan on returning to work and social activities for about 2 weeks. It is important that you avoid lifting or pushing anything heavy for 3-4 weeks after your surgery. You should avoid sex for about 1 week and contact with the breasts should be restricted to gentle contact for about 6 weeks. Your energy level will be much less for several weeks after your surgery so you should limit your exercise to stretching, bending and swimming until your stamina returns. The surgeon will tell you everything you need to know about post-surgery recovery and it is important that you follow his advice closely to ensure optimal healing.

What are the risks and complications of Mammaplasty?
Mammaplasty is normally a safe procedure. However, as with any type of surgery there are certain risk and complications. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, and permanent loss of feeling in your nipples or breasts. Some patient may develop small sores around their nipples after surgery. However, this is rare and can be treated with antibiotic creams. Mammaplasty can also leave you with slightly mismatched breasts or unevenly positioned nipples. In addition, future breast feeding may not be possible, since many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples are removed during surgery. A very rare complication is the loss of blood supply to the nipple and areola. The risk of complications arising can be reduced if you follow the surgeon’s advice closely.
Mammaplasty leaves noticeable, permanent scars. However, they will be covered by your bra or bathing suit. The scar is located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipples area along the lower crease of the breast. Scars often remain lumpy and red for months, after which they gradually become less obvious. Sometimes they eventually fade to thin white lines. Occasionally, if only fat needs to be removed, liposuction alone can be used to reduce breast size, leaving minimal scars.
